VOLUNTEER AT 'OUR VILLAGE'

New Hope for Cambodian Children accepts volunteers at ‘Our Village'.

Volunteers are typically engaged in educational and support activities such as teaching English or computers or helping in our preschool or nursery.

‘Our Village’ can accommodate both short term volunteers who stay less than one month, and long term volunteers onsite.

‘Our Village’, which is located 33 Kilometers (20 miles) from the capital, Phnom Penh, in Kampong Speu province, on 18 acres of land. 24 houses for the children and caregivers, 9 kitchens, an office and clinic, classrooms, sporting facilities, and a volunteer/visitors center make up ‘Our Village’.

Those living in “Our Village” will share meals with the children and caregivers, and live a simple, Khmer-style lifestyle(ie - no hot water, no cable TV, and electricity for only 3 ½ hours per day). However, our volunteer/visitors center does have a TV and DVD player, and volunteers are encouraged to join in the children’s volleyball, basketball, soccer and ping pong games, as well as initiating their own activities.

Individual volunteers are requested to contribute US$200 per week to cover their orientation, food, safe drinking water and lodging, limited internet connection, and airport pick up and transportation to “Our Village”.

For longer term volunteers, the fee is reduced to only US$100 per week after the first 4 weeks.

NHCC also has special rates for groups who would like to volunteer/visit. Please contact us for the dates available and cost information. Groups are expected to make a contribution to support the work of NHCC.

If you are interested in experiencing and contributing to the inspirational work that NHCC is doing at ‘Our Village’, please contact us at nhcc-2006@hotmail.com.

What Our Volunteers Have to Say:

“Sitting back here in Denmark, thinking about NHCC, I think about the fresh air, the children playing, the laughter, our disco-dancing night, singing boogie woogie in English class and people everywhere smiling and happy to have me part of their community. I do not think of them as sick, weak children but children, who needed and still need extra help. They need their medicine and most important, they need love. I feel that I made a difference to the children, and the children certainly made a big difference to me!

When I first came to NHCC I was a little anxious, maybe a little bit terrified to be out here in this small village with so many people with HIV. But then being face to face with the children, my concerns sounded a bit silly to me. The children were so easy to love and seemed more healthy than I expected. In the beginning of my stay I was told about HIV and how it is transmitted and soon afterwards I was calm and comfortable with it.”

-Pernille Nymann Eriksen, 22 years old, Denmark

Thanks for the wonderful stay at NHCC. I will miss the beautiful children in a big way. I loved every part of my two weeks and hope to make it back at some stage in the near future. Best of luck in the future. Best of luck to the future volunteers. I hope you have as much fun as I have.
