New Hope for Cambodian Children (NHCC)

The residents of ‘Our Village’ look to their future with renewed hope; they are medically healthy and have grown up surrounded by loving care. Yet as they transition from adolescence into adulthood, the community that has helped to raise them is now required to provide a new array of resources.

‘Our Village’s emphasis on providing children with a strong educational base ensures that these children are able to re-integrate into Cambodian society as functional and productive adults. However, NHCC views its programming as incomplete if the children in their care are not given the opportunity and guidance to become independent, self-sustaining adults once they complete high school.

Thus, NHCC plans the establishment of the ‘New Hope House’ in the Cambodian capital of Phnom Penh, so that ‘Our Village’ residents, once they graduate high school, may continue to live in a safe, secure environment whilst carrying on their studies at public university or in vocational training centers. NHCC seeks to establish a dormitory-style facility for these students, as well as provide loans and social support as they take their first steps into adulthood.

NHCC’s ‘New Hope House’ will provide students with:
•           Safe, secure dormitory-style Housing in the capital of Phnom Penh
•           School Supplies (books, stationary, uniforms)
•           On-site access to computers and educational tutors
•           Three nutritional, high-protein meals per day (provided by an on-site cook)
•           Transport to and from the local health for regular ART treatment
•           A ‘Dorm Mother’

Additionally, NHCC will seek student loans to support each of its residents’ educational or vocational training as they move into independent, self-sufficient adulthood. These scholarship loans will function similar to those of the United States; students will be required to pay back their loan in small increments after 6 months full-time gainful employment. Payments will be collected in a revolving fund, which will then be re-invested to provide younger students with the same opportunity to study full-time.

NHCC’s ‘New Hope House’ is designed to offer its residents an equal opportunity to pursue their post-secondary educational or vocational pursuits. Lacking the traditional family structure that supports the majority of Cambodian young adults in continuing their education and seeking employment, ‘Our Village’s residents will be provided with a secure, supportive environment from which they may be able to pursue their adult lives.

Students at the house will experience both the autonomy and the responsibility that comes with moving away from “home”, while still maintaining ties to the familial network that they have grown up with. In addition, the dormitory supervisor and on-site tutors will be available to educate residents in life skills, such as financial management and sexual education, as well as ensuring that these students are well-equipped to maintain their health once they have completed their studies, so that they may confidently enter into adulthood. Finally, educational support for residents’ studies will also be offered at the house, so that residents are well-equipped to succeed.
