OUR HISTORY
NHCC was founded in 2006 by John and Kathy Tucker, an American couple who have spent ten years working with children with H.I.V. in Cambodia. Prior to NHCC, John and Kathy founded and directed the ‘Little Sprouts’ program. ‘Little Sprouts’ was the first program to provide ARV treatment and residential care to Cambodian children infected with HIV/AIDS, and quickly grew to become the largest pediatric HIV/AIDS treatment program in Southeast Asia, having treated over 400 children.
Recognising the urgent need for an expanded assistance program to support the 4400 Cambodian children living with the disease, in 2006 John and Kathy founded New Hope for Cambodian Children (NHCC), an organization which provides holistic care to children infected with HIV/AIDS, and provides social support to over 1000 infected children and their affected families.
NHCC currently maintains an office near its ‘Transitional House’ in Takhmao, Kandal province. ‘Our Village,’ is located in a rural village in Kampong Speu. Their ‘Outreach Program’ currently operates in the six provinces of Kampong Chhnang, Prey Veng, Svay Rieng, Takeo and Kampong Speu and Kandal.
In 2006, the Clinton Foundation implemented a program to provide ARV medication to infected Cambodian children through the National Center for HIV/AIDS Dermatology and STD’s (NCHADS), under the Ministry of Health. This reduced the demands upon NHCC to provide medication for hundreds of children, allowing the organization to focus primarily on the provision of social, nutritional, and educational support. Today, over 867 children receive food subsidies, free transport to their local health center, school uniforms, shoes and educational support through the ‘Outreach Program’, whilst another 186 receive full-time care and support at ‘Our Village’.
John and Kathy’s work in working with peadiatric AIDS in Cambodia has been recognized in The Lancet International Journal, in Bill Clinton’s publication ‘Giving’, and at international AIDS conferences throughout the world, including the May 2009 Life Ball, held in Vienna, in which Ivana Trump personally donated to NHCC.
